Nagle Notes: Buttons

Hello people of the future,

I’m finally back after my little hiatus. This week might not be the most interesting (and possibly common knowledge to others) but I got some bigger posts coming later this summer.

I mentioned to a coworker about needing a button up shirt for an event and they countered with “my favorite button down is …”. I didn’t think much of it during the conversation but it stuck in my head. That phrasing button down is interchangeable with button up? It’s like inflammable and flammable right?

Well technically they are not the same, though colloquially you can get away with this grammatical gaffe. A “button up” is a shirt with a collar and buttons down the middle. What makes a “button down” different is the collar has buttons to hold it down. Button ups tend to be worn more with ties or in a formal setting while a button down is more casual and can be dressed down.

I’ll be back next week with something a little more substantial.

Onwards,
Nagle
