Nagle Notes: Finishing vs Quitting
Hello friends,
Growing up you are always told to not give up and persevere. Sometimes, you need to know yourself well enough to stop and change course as the phrase “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.”
This week I was reading a bunch of books and started one called Creative Interviewing. The book is for journalism students about how to conduct interviews and getting more candid responses. The main takeaway I found from the first few chapters is interviewers listen. Listening is a valuable skill and sincerely listening can help spot gems you can circle back to and get deeper and more honest answers. The next few chapters were not appealing so I went to the table of contents and scanned for any interesting titles. I skimmed the one on notetaking but didn’t find anything useful besides the pros and cons of physical notes and how they impact listening.
Now, I can be confident in putting the book down and not worrying about finishing the book. People hold completing books in high regard like it is an accomplishment. If a book no longer provides value, it is perfectly acceptable (and recommended) that you stop and move on to a better one.
Onwards,
Nagle
