Nagle Notes: The Tour de France
Hello friends,
The most physically enduring athletic competition. The Tour de France peloton rides around France, up mountains and across fields with the skill and strategy of every cyclist competing for the Yellow Jacket. One thing that surprised me this year was discovering the route wasn’t continuous. I had always assumed that they finish in one town, then leave the next morning heading for the next town. I was curious if this was something for this year, so I dug a little deeper and discovered that every year the tour has flights and drives in-between some days to get to new locations. This broke the façade that I was operating under the entire tour was a continuous route. The reason behind this? Mostly money. Towns and cities must place a bid to host a start or finish (the finish is more prestigious, so it costs more) and town are inspected and approved years in advance.
Last bit, in case you are curious as to why women do not compete in the Tour, here is a great interview from a woman competing in a men’s Grand Prix.
Onwards,
Nagle
