Nagle Notes: Format Wars

Hello people of the future,

Always follow your curious mind and see where you end up. I’ve gone down many Wikipedia rabbit holes and found so many gems that I never would have known without the free storage of world knowledge. One of my favorites this week has been The Loudness War. I had heard of format wars, the most famous/recognized being the Videotape format war between VHS and Betamax, but within pop music, there has been a volume war over the years. The louder the song, the more it stood out on the jukebox or the radio. The tradeoff comes from the compression of the song where the finer acoustic details of the song are lost.

Decisions in life always come with tradeoffs. If there isn’t a tradeoff, there isn’t a decision (do what is the best). Knowing how to approach tradeoffs is a skill, one learned with time and a couple of failures and lessons learned along the way.

Onwards,
Nagle
