Nagle Notes: Oversights

Hello people of the future,

Everyone growing up has gaps, misunderstanding you adopted and never really challenged. Even sitcoms have pointed out some of our erroneous mental lapses. It can be not knowing how to pronounce a word, mishearing a song lyric, or not realizing the Berenstein Bears are the Berenstain Bears (the last one is a good Mandela Effect).

I recently realized (and feel a little embarrassed by) is the difference between prodigal and prodigy. I knew they were different words, but they were so similar I assumed they were related. Prodigal was how you described someone who was a prodigy. The etymology is similar, but they derive from different Latin words, prodigere -> Prodigal and prodigium -> prodigy.

It served as a reminder; you don’t know everything. Humility is important. And if you choose to learn from experiences, you only make the mistake once.

Onwards,
Nagle
